Screening Tool for Sustainability Assessment: Case of Municipal Solid Waste Management in Nonthaburi, Thailand

In this study an assessment tool aiming at evaluating case studies on solid waste management from Asian developing countries, which was developed under the Integrated Sustainable Solid Waste Management in Asia (ISSOWAMA) Project, funded by the European Commission, is used to assess the performance of the MSW management system in Nonthaburi. Such performance is based on several sustainability criteria including technical, environment and health, financial and economic, socio-cultural, institutional, and legal and policy performance aspects. In this paper, the ISSOWAMA Project is first introduced before detailing the methodology used for assessing MSW management. The results of the assessment performed for Nonthaburi are then presented, and lessons learnt and recommendations drawn.
