Small Scale Waste Management Models for Rural, Remote and Isolated Communities
The Solid Waste Management Task Group of the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) commissioned UMA Environmental to study and evaluate small scale waste management models (SSMs) which are appropriate for implementation in rural, remote and isolated Canadian communities and regions.
Methods for managing solid wastes from rural, remote and isolated Canadian communities and regions were identified through an investigation of existing small scale waste management models in a variety of North American and European jurisdictions. The paper summarizes the evaluation criteria, profiles of SSM case studies and recommends strategies for government, private sector and for individuals to implement SSMs in Canada.
