Extended Methodology for Different Environmental Technology Assessment Methods

Various methods are available to assess the human health and environmental impacts of economic activities. The focus in this document is on assessment of Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) activities. The available methods for assessment of human health and environmental impacts overlap and complement each other by covering different aspects and looking from different angles. It is for stakeholders not always clear when to use what assessment method.
This document, one of the ISSOWAMA (Integrated Sustainable Solid Waste Management in Asia) project-products, first evaluates four assessment methods separately:

  • Technology Assessment
  • Environmental Impact Assessment
  • Risk Assessment
  • Life Cycle Assessment

It also compares these methods on how they overlap and complement each other with the aim of arriving at guidance for their most appropriate use. This guidance takes the form of a decision tree of questions and its applicability is illustrated with two Asian examples.

  • Large composting facility in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
  • Waste management alternatives in Nonthaburi, Thailand
