Higher Education Needs for Capacity Building at Local Level for Solid Waste Management through 3R in Asian developing countries

The purpose of this investigation is to highlight the higher education needs for Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) through 3R by scrutinizing the present academic curriculum of Solid Waste Management (SWM) and capacity available with Local Urban Governments (LUGs) of the Asian developing countries. The analysis shows that the present academic curriculum is at very nascent stages and only has the elementary concepts of SWM. Hence, there is an urgent need to revamp the present curriculum. We also subsequently felt that majority of LUGs do not have skilled manpower and technical capacity to deal with the problems of SWM and would not be able to tackle it efficiently in the near future. Therefore, capacity building by means of conducting professional solid waste management training, introducing executive diploma/certificate and correspondence courses on 3R and SWM is also needed on a priority basis.
